Repainting a flaking external PVC wood grain effect door

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.30 PM

Hi I'm looking for some advice please. The paint on our front door is now starting to peel and I was wondering how to repaint it. The door is a moulded GRP composite door with a wood grain effect. From looking at pictures of the house being built it's clear that the door was painted with some sort of satin black paint once the doors were on site as this one was a beige colour pre-painting. How do I remove the old paint without sanding flat the wood effect? Painting straight over is just going to look awful plus the more coats that go on the more of the wood grain look is going to disappear under the coats so the old paint needs to come off at least where it's flaking. I have absolutely no clue where to start...and the advice from IG Doors is don't paint it... yet they got painted when they were installed so I'm confused. Why advise not to paint a door that was clearly painted by the house builder....

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Definitely wouldn’t use nitromos on upvc. The only thing I would suggest is rub with a fine sanding pad. Wipe down with methylated spirits and coat up with Zinsser All coat

The best way would be to strip the door using nitro morse , Ensuring you follow the instructions on the container before attempting to repaint.use a solvent based undercoat before applying the finish coats.

Use a Stripper suitable for UPVC doors and then buy a tin of UPVC paint making sure to use a small brush. That's what we did to ours and it looks fantastic. As AJW said above ensure it is Solvent based undercoat.

I would only use a paint stripper which is suitable UPVC as other strippers can melt the UPVC. Use a super bonding primer such as Zinsser Bulls Eye Plus before any topcoats
