Sewer smell in bedroom, when upstairs neighbour flushes toilet
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.43 PM
Hi there, When I moved into my flat earlier this year, the washing machine was located in my bedroom, which we have since moved into the kitchen. There was a P trap in the bedroom to connect to the washing machine drainage, however, this was also removed. The plumber just left the remaining wastewater pipe open, so I simply inserted a plug to cover the pipe. When my upstairs neighbour flushes their toilet, I can now smell what's moving through the pipes. After some googling, it seems as if it's because this P trap is no longer there to block the gases from leaking into my flat. My questions are: a) Does it make sense that it could be the lack of p trap, and the plug isnt enough to block the gases? b) What is a potential solution, since I'm not sure it'll make sense to add in a P trap without an appliance? Should I simply add some calking to the plug, to ensure that nothings escaping? Thank you very much for your help!
