Changing boiler ahead of megaflow bring installed

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.43 PM

Hi there. We live in a leaky Victorian detached house with a 20 year old potterton boiler and water tank in the loft. We are planning an extension next year in which we will upgrade the heating system, install underfloor heating in a new kitchen and install a new water tank (megaflow or equivalent) which will also mean moving the boiler to a new location (yet to be built). Given the massive increase in heating cost I’m trying to work out if it’s worth getting a new more efficient boiler more quickly. Ie keeping it in its current location for a year before moving it once our extension is done. Assuming the installation cost isn’t prohibitive would anyone happen to know if a generic system boiler can then be used to power a system using a megaflow? Or is it something different?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Firstly i wouldn't rush to buy your new boiler now because you'll end up paying double in installation costs. Secondly if your considering buying a combi boiler instead of a heat only boiler i would say that's pretty wise considering the price difference, and yes it will still work the same no issues

It all depends on hot water demand in the property. (Ie baths showers sinks) a combi boiler wouldn't be the best option if you needed equal pressures for demand around your house. The underfloor manifold will need to be zoned off with its own controls. Which will be easier to do with a indirect megaflo or equivalent as all valves would be located in the cylinders vicinity. The make of the boiler you used with the unvented cylinder wouldn't matter as long as it was a system boiler. A lower end boiler would still do the job until you needed or even wanted to change it as it would still come with a warranty. Hope this helps.
