Bricklaying & Repointing

What depth of Footings will I need

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.43 PM

I’m building a breeze block shed, 10x6 I’ve been told I’ll need around 220 block for a single skin wall, it will have a height around 2 metres it will have a upvc door around 900mm wide and a upvc window roughly 600x900 so I can stand inside and wondering what depth footing’s I’ll need, I want too add a concrete floor as well thinking ideally when I’ve got the first 2 courses laid, nothing heavy will be going on it do around 2- inches thick, any help is appreciated thanks

A concrete footing of 150mm depth will be sufficient to carry a shed. Be sure to find solid ground before casting the concrete. You mentioned a single skin wall of breeze block. You should be aware that a single skin of breeze block would be subject to damp via capillary when the weather is wet. Rendering a single skin with a good render system should stop damp if done correctly. You should also be aware when applying render the blocks should be concrete and not breeze. Personally I would recommend a cavity wall , with cavity trays at dpc level. This will ensure a dry interior to the shed

The standard depth for foundation is 800mm deep for a house with 225-300mm of concrete or until you find clay or hard ground you want 150mm of hardcore under your concrete floor and 75-100 mm of concrete do it right the first time and the job is done don’t forget the dpm under the concrete floor I know it sounds pretty deep for a shed but that way it’s done properly
