Twisted joist in first floor bedroom
Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.58 PM
Hi, We have three joists in one of the first floor bedrooms which are around 8-9mm higher on one side of the room. This creates quite a noticeable dip down onto other side of the room. Someone suggested planing them down but pipes are notched into the top of the joists so there isn't much room for that. What would be the best way to improve the uneven floor? We plan on putting down underlay and carpet once decorated. Thanks

There are a number of ways to do it depending on how bad it is, you could add strips to the lower joists to even them up a bit which is probably the easiest solution or you could fix secondary joists to the existing ones and have the floor sat on those which you can level up to the highest of the old ones, Im sure there may be other ways but hope this helps

A budget method of dealing with this problem would be to purchase 8/9 mm timber strips (from a regular builders merchant) and screw them on top of the low sections so that the floor joists reaches the same level as the existing. Be cautious with the screwing i.e. avoid cables and gas central heating pipes etc.
