Unsteady tap flow & randomly banging pipes

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.05 PM

Hi, I've had some issues with the pipes in my house knocking once or twice at a time. At the start the noise happened within a few minutes of using sinks, toilets, etc. At that point in time I got a bit of water hammer when the toilet stopped filling. The water pressure to the house is pretty high. I'm not getting the water hammer anymore, but the knocking noise is now happening sporadically throughout the day/night. I've found the ensuite tap when on a lowish pressure has a visibly unsteady flow. The taps only about a year old, and tbf I've never turned it on low-ish until today so it might always have been like that? I've checked my water meter over a 12 hour period when I was out, and there doesn't appear to be any leaks in the house up to the meter. Does anyone have any ideas what the issue could be?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

This sounds like excessive pressure. My first port of call would be to fit a shock arrestor ( mini expansion vessel ) to the cold mains inlet & see if this elevates the issue. Most stop taps and water meters have a none return valve built into them now to prevent back contamination… with people now having lever taps installed replacing traditional taps the water is shut off rapidly leaving a large back pressure in your main with no where for it to expand.

Sounds like pipes need clipping to stop water hammer or fit a pressure reducing valve on incoming water main

It could be a mixture of things insufficient pipe clips, causing plastic pipes to jump about in studwall, stuttering tape or stop-cocks because of night pressure is your mains above 3 bar might need to reduce it down try to identify where the noise is coming from older types of systems have loft tanks with the loft tank ball valve stuttering
