Damp Proofing

Corner of chimney breast and neighbouring wall?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.48 PM

I have just removed the skirting board to paint the wall. On removal I noticed that the wall where the chimney breast joins the neighbouring wall and goes to the out side wall it is very damp and the plaster is crumbling. Floor it’s self is concrete but doesn’t feel damp like the walls. I think I can see the DPC where the plaster has crumbled. What can this be and how can I fix this? Considering how the weather has been lately I was surprised that it felt as damp as it was. I will post photos if I’m able to.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It may need stripping, dpc, tanking, replastering. The next step would be to get a survey and assess the situation and go from there.

With concrete floors sometimes it needs venting more so than wooden floors to air the walls It also could be rising damp vapours One solution would be strip off the plaster 1.2 meters high and use tanking slurry as the damp proof membrane then waterproof coats render Don’t put topcoat plaster down to the floor leave it plaster free behind the skirtings. Good luck

I would check the cavity to see if any debris is allowing any damp bridging then carry out remedial work yo the area.

What you need to do is strip back ideally a meter high slurry tank it and then sand cement flush to the wall then re skim the whole wall
