Damp Proofing

High humidity in under stairs cupboard

House is approx 1920s solid walls suspended flooring. I have high humidity in my under stairs cupboard, with musty smell, Walls are internal and living room on each side of the walls. No water pipes, humidity around 70-80%. Cupboard door left open, no drying clothes etc leaving windows and doors open. Other rooms humidity levels are better then within here.

Is the kitchen or bathroom nearby? We would recommend moisture activated extractor fan to be fitted to kitchen or bathroom or both. This will eradicate the hot moisture finding its way to the cold wall under the stairs and so prevent mould. Kind regards Rodney Britannia plastering

This is an absolutely normal condition and don’t worry too much about it. 1) make sure there are no air gaps in the floor where under-floor air can enter the void under the stairs . 2) in stall two air vents , one at low level and one at high level in the void . These must only be internal vents ; not to the exterior.

I would check from the floor . Stick a A4 sheet of polyethene to the stone floor . after several days check under the sheet . if there is a rectangular damp patch under, moister is being drawn up from the floor. if you eradicate this it will solve the problem.
