Will we need to replaster wet plaster after the source of a leak is repaired?
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.48 PM
We had two rooms plastered. Two areas of plaster did not dry. We have found what we believe to be causing the issue (roof leaks). My question is once these leaks are fixed – should the plaster dry and fix itself? Or do we need to get the plaster taken off in that area and redone? Many thanks. EDIT: It’s a chimney breast and the base of an internal wall. Not been painted yet

I'm guessing it's the ceiling? If it's bowed then yes if it's just stained with water no it can be stain blocked and emulsioned

It would be healthier to take the plaster and make new plaster.

So regarding re plastering over wet plaster due to leaks that have now been sourced. This will depend on how the two wet patches dry out if the areas sound hollow or unsound to the touch then unfortunately the two ares will need to be removed and re plastered normally not a big job.But once dry if the above doesn't apply all that's needed is a stain block over the affected areas then simply repainted.

If the ceiling/slash wall has water damage then it will.need to be replaced with new plasterboard due to.the moisture. It might seem dry to touch but there could possibly be dampness in the air which can cause mould. Simply just painting over the wet stain isn't solving the issues that can occur after I would highly recommend taking the board that has been damaged down and putting in new.
