Paint peeling in swathes

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.43 PM

Help please. Problem with the cloakroom. Painted new plaster with Wickes New Plaster paint, then dulux trade supermatt then second coat of dulux trade supermatt and very unusually it needed another coat as still grinning though. Started to apply 3rd coat and the paint started peeling in swathes from the corners of the room and where the ceiling meets the walls. The new plaster paint is still on the walls. The tub of new plaster paint has been used on other newly plastered surfaces and covered with the same tub of supermatt in other parts of the house and it is fine so it cannot be either of the paints or the technique used to apply. We always lightly sand before first coat on new plaster and lightly sand between coats. I have no idea what could cause this and so no idea how to remedy. Any advice would be appreciated. Have read about Zinsser Bin primer sealer for Zinsser 123 and wondered if it would be an idea to use this on these areas first? Thank you

Hi moonstar. This could be caused by one of many reasons, from the plaster not being fully dried out, each coat of paint not being fully dry before applying the next coat, the wickes product causing adhesion issues with the following coat or even something simple like not removing the dust on the surface properly, created by sanding. Without seeing it first, it’s impossible to answer. But looks like you’ve done a little homework. Zinsser is a fantastic product, but BIN or 123 is over kill. Zinsser do 2 products which are designed for these kind of issues, one is called “gardz” the other is “peel stop” both very similar and both fantastic products. There’s is also a cheaper alternative from beeline called “wall primer/sealer” I hope this helps👍
