Can I plug my combi boiler into an extension lead?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.43 PM
Hi guys, I am in the process of renovating my new house. I had it rewired a few weeks ago. I have now noticed the electricians have installed a new plug socket near the combi boiler, however the cable for the combi boiler isn't quite long enough to fit into the new plug socket. Is it safe to plug the combi boiler into an extension lead? I have seen online the plug will need a 3Amp fuse. Is this the fuse in the extension lead, combi boiler plug or both? Thank you

I would not recommend plugging your boiler in off a plug top. It should be connected via a dedicated circuit into a fused connection unit rated at 3amps. This will also ensure the wiring is incorporated with the properties fix electrical wiring system. If you use a plug then their is a possibility that someone may unplug the boiler.
Finally with the boiler being connected via a plug you are technically saying its a portable appliance which means it will need a PAT test carried out.

Normaly should be a dedicated circuit. But all older properties they've have the boiler on the downstairs ring main or kitchen ring main.Change the socket to a switched fused spur ,flex out the load to the boiler, fused down to 3A,all done.

Boilers do not need to be on a dedicated circuit. A switched fused spur is the preferred method of connecting a boiler and I think its a Gas Safe requirement rather than an electrical requirement so that service personnel can easily isolate the boiler. Don't use a plug and socket or an extension lead. Yet another bodge by so called electricians. Socket for a boiler. Really? Get them to come back and change it for a switched fused spur and get them to wire your combi boiler up for you.

Yes as a temporary measure you can plug your combi boiler into a plug socket just until your electrician can return to site and connect a longer flex from the boiler to whatever controller your going to use then into a fused spur. Job complete when tested
