Old tiles inside roof & loft legs v 89mm cls
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.43 PM
Hi was looking to board up the loft for use and what not. Had double side extension done a few years back , builder has left part of the old roof with some tiles on it. Better to take them out? Added extra weight can’t be good Also instead of using loft legs was going to add 89mm cls to joists and put flooring down on that would that be ok with the current insulation which is around 6/7” Thanks

Hi. Regarding the excess of tiles, I'm assuming they are now trapped inside a bigger roof? The simple answer is if they bother you remove them (though doing so from inside won't be easy) as far as the weight, roofs are designed to carry that weight plus they will stay dry so no no extra weight when it rains.
Your second question. Technically the loft legs would give the correct spacing but as insulation and the ecological importance of it increases, so too will regs. I'd hazard a guess your joists are 6"/150mm? An extra 90mm will allow space between the floor and the insulation but will be more time consuming to fix.

As for your floor ipresume you have 4 x2 ceiling joists if the loft is just for storage I would either use 2x2 or 63 mm cls at 400 centres 90 degrees screwed to existing joists then. board over scew don't nail.
