After gas fire removal how to cover the hole?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.43 PM

Looking to cap off gas fire then remove from wall and board over. First part will be done by a Gas Safe engineer. What to put over the hole left behind? I was thinking a piece of dark varnished wood or white painted wood over the front of the hole, and screwed to the wall, rather than plastering over plasterboard, in case I need access. Has anyone done this kind of job for anyone? The wood would protrude slightly, which is fine. I guess any pipes and parts in the chimney will get left in place in case I wanted gas heating in future? I would really appreciate anyone's advice on this. Thanks very much!

You can purchase a flue balloon from the internet or at the merchants

I normally board up then put a smart electric fire on it looks really nice and cheap to run and nice focal point 😁

you need to vent the flue opening to prevent mould and damp build up. Once capped all fixings can be left for any future endeavours. they're usually boarded over and vented or bricked up and vented with a half brick gap.

As long as the pipe has been capped with a soldered fitting and wrapped in denzo tape for protection I would normal block up the opening and plaster it over it.
