Which wires to attach to in old style wiring for a ceiling light?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.05 PM
Hi all, I have a wires for a ceiling light in my study. I recently got it plastered and the plasterer took the old light off but I didn't get a chance to see how it was connected up. I have 2 red wires separately linked together, then a connection block with a single black wire on the left, 2 black wires in the middle and 2 green wires on the right. How should I connect the new light that has a usual live, neutral, earth setup?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If you are unsure you should not be doing this - get an Electrian in safer and they will also make sure it is safe earth readings and earth fault
Don’t risk your or your family’s safety

Red to brown
Green to yellow
Blew to bits!!
Call an electrician, save a life!
call outs range from £60 to £90, if you screw through a wire in the ceiling it’ll cost you more and you’ll need an electrician anyway

First off if your unsure get an electrician in to sort this out. If your struggling to find one, first switch off the electric to your lights or better still switch the board off. If your putting up a new pendant my guess is that the two reds are your live so into the middle three connections, next the two blacks so will be your neutrals and which your blue pendant wire will also connect to and the single black will be your switch wire to operate the light which will be brown in your pendant.. Finally your greens are your earth wires which will connect to your large terminal screw on the side. As i stated above if unsure contact an electrician. Hope this helps.

I would get an Electrician in to carry this out. Simple job for a Competent Tradesman. Dangerous for someone who is not sure. . .
