Replace Powermax 185 heating system

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.47 PM

Hi. We are considering buying a 3 bedroomed (2 shower, 1 bathroom) house. It has a Powermax 185 heating system. As it is approaching 20 years old (and sounds like trouble) we wondered how straightforward it would be to remove it and replace with a combi boiler. We have seen all sorts of things online about needing new pipework and flues to ensure the new boiler warranty isn’t invalidated. We are also worried that it would involve having power showers ripped out and replaced. It is a nice house in very good decorative order. If boiler replacement was straightforward then we would be interested. If it involves too much disruption then we would give it a miss. The existing system is in a large cupboard in an internal bedroom wall. I assume the flue goes through the roof but would need to confirm this. Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes it would involve removing power showers, flue goes through roof, probably a gas pipe upgrade too, more than likely new rad valves too certainly a power flush,a combi isnt always the best answer tbh, I'd personally get a gas engineer round for an opinion and a site survey.

You do not have to have a combi ,there are plenty of boilers out there to suit your needs. Yes pipework will need changing system cleaned ,but getting a energy efficient boiler to a 20 year old boiler is a win win to.me .hope that helps you . I would talk to a plumber regarding your concerns, but don't let the boiler put you off buying the house ,
