Driveways & Paving

New installed Driveway is 1 to 3 inches higher than the public footpath.

Hi Guys, Firstly, I don't live on any type of hill. I just have an average 3 bed semi detatched house with a driveway that easily fits 2 cars. I've just had a new driveway laid with concrete flags and black brick edging. It looks great until you view it from the public footpath whereby on the left hand side it's approx 1 inch higher than the public pavement, running up to approx 3 inches higher on the right hand side where the brick edging has already come loose after only a few days. In fact the bricks do not appear to be cemented in place at all. The driveway installer has put tarmac up against the front of the driveway where it meets the public footpath which not only looks a complete eyesore and stands out like a sore thumb, and has already started to come apart literally only days after it was put down. In my opinion this is a trip hazard, or sprained ankle, or something worse waiting to happen on my watch!! I went for a long walk yesterday and looked at about 150 houses and all of them had perfectly level driveways where they meet the public footpath. So, in my view my driveway has not been finished correctly. My question is: Surely the end of the driveway is supposed to be level with the public footpath? Or are there any legitimate reasons why my drive should be completed like this? Or has my driveway installer simply not calculated the downward gradient to the public footpath correctly? I've told him to come back and sort it out, but so far he's not shown up. Appreciate your help and suggestions!! Many thanks. Phil

Poor workmanship, it should be laid level with the path. Rouge trader report to trading standards if he doesn't come back and put it right.. In my experience the hight difference won't be the only problem with the driveway.

1 sounds like he set his edge stones out too high... easy mistake for a novice .. 2, didn't dig out enough .. easy mistake for a novice ... 3, the pathway has no straight line to follow so he just lifted the level up . 4, the price you pay .. cheap price cheap job.. 5, negotiation is always the best policy 6, only the customer and the contractor will know if there is a problem .. 7, as a contractor I always leave the client happy with the end product before full payment is received... 8, I choose my clients like my clients choose me discuss the job and the finished product before I start ..

Sometimes if the path is very uneven in which in my area they are horrendous so I usually lift them a inch or so above footpath and put them in level, you can't follow the footpath because it would look terrible, also some people put higher than pavement to stop water flowing into the driveway depending on the levels of the path. Aslong as its not astronomically higher and feels like a speed bump when you drive onto the drive and they are level your probably worrying over nothing.
