PIR motion sensors in commercial/communal areas
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.47 PM
In the scenario fo a typical modern flat block, where there are a series of LED lights and multiple motion sensors across a hallway, will the delay timer for lights to be switched off reside in within a central control unit or will each PIR sensor have an adjustable dial (in which case I'd assume the overall system defaults to the one sensor that has the longest delay set)?

Typically with this type of system, the motion sensors (assuming they are separate units from the light fittings) are interlinked and no central control unit. This means that each sensor would have adjustable times for how long they stay on. All the sensors act in the same way by keeping the lights on for a set time after the last movement. Therefore the amount of time the lights stay on is a combination of whichever sensor is set to the greatest time delay/which sensor last detected movement. If one sensor is set to 5 mins and is the ONLY sensor to pick up movement, then 5 mins is the delay. If another is set to 10 mins and they BOTH pick up movement, then 10 mins is the delay.
