Do i need a carpenter as well as carpet fitter?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.29 PM

Hi Guys We need new carpet on the upstairs landing area, and the stairs to match, simple job i know However one of the boards by the airing cupboard is sitting proud, it makes a terrible noise when anyone stands on it and i need to get it fixed I took the carpet up and it looks like the tacks (nails) have gone through- i am reluctant to just tack it down as i know all the gas and water pipes are in that area. The wood looks fine. So i need 1 floorboard taking up, checking for nails etc and then screwing back into the joist. Then new carpet putting down Will some carpet fitters be able to do the floorboard? or do i need to get a carpenter or joiner in first? I know people will say 'just tack it down' but i dont know where the old tacks have gone and i am just wary of screwing into a water or gas pipe. Thanks.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Don’t just screw it down as could hit a pipe or wire, A carpet fitter probably won’t fix that for you but a floor layer like myself probably would do the job for you.

Public liability doesn't cover joinery work. If a floor layer whacks a pipe/wire as unlikely as it is. who foots the bill. Most carpet fitters would put a screw in it as its simple to locate the joists

Everyone thinks they can do any job, ridiculous. Call a carpenter first, just in case there is an under lying problem. Not a jack of all trades, and master of none.

This is usually a simply problem to fix. The best way is to lift the squeaky board and see if there are pipes and cables underneath and mark where they are located on the floorboard. you can then screw the board back down. (I recommend these screws for this job) https://www.screwfix.com/p/spax-wirox-tx-countersunk-flooring-screw-4-5-x-60mm-300-pack/88716?kpid=88716&ds_rl=1249413&gclid=CjwKCAiAu5agBhBzEiwAdiR5tKgJEIjFQfHMVuqXW6q-7Q87uBKMzqsIP8x2IqA-w8dwS92WBg3_ARoCp94QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds if the damaged section of board doesn't fall on a joist, you can add supporting timber to the underside of the adjoining boards.
