Best material for a roof gulley replacement
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.29 PM
Hi, We have a gulley on a London roof (~8M) that has leaked numerous times over the past 5 years. Its been patched multiple times and we now want it stripped back and replaced. I have spoken to 3 local roofing companies with each suggesting a different system - EPDM rubber, GRP fibreglass and felt. Please can anyone advise on what would be best? Durability is probably more of a priority than installation cost. Thanks in advance.

Hi, Without any doubt,I would strongly advise you to use,at the very least, code five lead.
Although you may have been advised by various roofing companies to use such modern products, for example: GRP or EPDM Rubber. None of these will be as effective as traditional lead.
Yes, these modern products are cheaper, and if installed correctly, do a decent job.Lead is tried and tested, and has been in use for hundreds of years.
If you do decide to go with lead, make sure that the quote includes,a geotextile underlay which helps the contraction of the lead, and also use Tpren joints, wealded to the lead, for additional expansion.
I hope you find this advice helpful.
Best of luck,
Adrian

For any job I would always use Felt, two layer system unless it needs insulating again then it’ll be a vapour layer underneath the insulation to prevent condensation from below. Felt has a 20+ year guarantee if installed correctly. Hope this helps. If you need anything else please don’t hesitate to contact me.

EPDM rubber single lengthy no joins less chance of leaking, everything will eventually leak at the joins, fibre glass is to rigid does not allow for expansion and extraction through changes in weather, although the longest lasting & most expensive would be lead it will out last anything else on the market if fitted correctly.
Good luck alex

GRP by far the best system for this no joins and 1 piece after curing,, both rubber and felt will have seams/joins which can fail

If you want to resolve the issue for a lifetime of at least 50 years, then code 5 lead, might be most expensive option but done properly you should never need to worry about it again
