Recommended height for opening between two rooms to make open plan living space
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.29 PM
Is six foot two sufficient or should the height be more like six foot eight or over. Is there any standard recommendation. Thank you

Hi
This can vary, depending on different circumstances. Firstly the width of the opening will depend on the size of the steel beam required to support what’s above. ( structural engineer should calculate that) Also you can in many cases hide the supporting steel work above the existing ceiling line provided the depth of the steel is compatible with the size of the existing ceiling joists.
If the steel is too large for that it will have to sit under the joists and so is then dictating the height of the opening.
