Bathroom Fitting

Bad finish in bathroom-can it be rescued?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.43 PM

Hi just want to know if what has been done to the bathroom floor is normal and get some advice on how to remedy some bits if possible. Had a bathroom fitter come to replace tiles in bathroom with vinyl flooring. Tiles were slightly uneven and grout was breaking up a bit in places. Fitter said unevenness was very bad and he would have to see what floor was like underneath, may need levelling etc. After about four hours of drilling and smashing he said that the board by the sink had been pressing on the pipework and the boards themselves were not great condition. Would get ply etc to lay then vinyl on top. 8mm ply was bought and he proceeded to cut and lay it, hours later, he got to vinyl stage I left him to it, just asked occasionally if it was going ok and he said yes but it was "too much, too much, much bigger job etc etc". Eventually, after 10 hours he cleared up and left. When I went up there after he had gone and had a good look, (and a massive clean up) I was baffled. The vinyl had been laid, but there are gaps along the sides by the bath, looks like he just sort of slashed away vaguely, there is no vinyl at the back of the sink and toilet, just floor boards and adhesive showing, there are chunks and smears of what look like dried brownish adhesive on the bottom of the toilet and sink, and a thick line of white sealant going all round the edge of the skirting over the edge of the vinyl and round the base of the sink and toilet. There a blobs and smears of sealant here and there under the edge of the wooden bath panel, trying to fill in gaps I think. Looks like lots of scuff, scrape type marks on the bottom of the bath panel and skirting. Looks like I will have to paint all the skirting (and the whole bathroom) and get some kind of panel/cut down skirting to go under the bottom of the bath panel to hide the mess. Couple of places had slightly mismatched vinyl laid, as if he had cut wrong and found another bit to stick down. Will I have to now replace the toilet and sink units as I can't see how I can get all the blobs and smears of brownish adhesive off them without damaging them? They look a mess. He is supposed to be coming back later this week to do other bits but I am not sure now, don't want him leaving my bath tiles a wreck if he replaces the glass shower screen. Very nice man, but I am a bit taken aback at the finish to be honest. At the moment would rather just give him his money now for the flooring and say (nicely) don't bother coming back. Bit worried now. Thanks.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

From your discription the job done is a horror show , he’s clearly had issues which sounds like due to his lack of skills there is no excuse for poor work . My opinion is , I’d not pay him . He should have removed skirting and replaced on top of vinyl after . As with toilet and pedestal they should have been removed and replaced also. I would imagine the brown adhesive can be removed but not patching of the vinyl . So it needs redoing I’m afraid

Firstly seems like someone who doesn't fit vinyl, bath panel should really be removed then put back after floor fitted for a better finish, i always get the proper trades in to do the flooring if vinyl as it can be easily cut incorrectly, can a thick layer of silicon hide the bad cuts around your area? (Just a thought to hide the gaps)

sounds like a right cowboy, tell him you are unhappy with his work, and you are going to get some one else to put it all right, take photos as evidence, from your description it sounds like he has not got a clue as to what he is doing.

Im a bit worried that he has replaced the floorboards with 8mm thick ply, ask to see the thickness of the floor he removed I'm sure it will be thicker than 8mm, unless your house is very old. You should see no gaps in the vinyl, best practice is to remove sink, toilet and bath panel to lay vinyl so they sit on top of the new floor. He could have fitted some white gloss trim or beading on top of the vinyl and flush against the skirting instead of siliconing. My advise would be to watch some "how to youtube videos" to give you an idea of the type of finish you should be expecting. Take photos of all your concerns and send them to him, or ask him to return to show him all the points you have mentioned and let him know you won't be paying until they have been put right.
