Light patch on driveway after trying to clean oil stains.

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.43 PM

Hello, I got some oil from a leaking diesel van's engine on a 1 year old new tarmac driveway. I tried to clean it using a method I found online where you spray carb cleaner on it, scrub it, then leave catnip on it overnight which is highly absorbent. I did this as many people on Amazon reviews were saying that the dedicated driveway cleaning chemicals they used were too harsh and would lighten it. After washing it off, it has lightened the driveway anyway by taking the black out of the tarmac. I don't think I can add pictures here. Is there a way to repair this? Can I use driveway restorer like Everbuild TARR5? If so, can I do a small patch and feather it out with a brush or will I just end up with a dark spot that stands out? If I was to paint the whole driveway with this, would the light spot need two coats? After I tried the above (carb cleaner and catnip) method to clean the driveway, I did find one person online that said never to put carb cleaner on Asphalt but I've read that Tar and Asphalt are not exactly the same thing. Any tips to help would be appreciated. Thanks.

When you lose the colour on Tar the only thing you can do is to paint it with Tar paint which is not so expensive you will never get the colour back and if you make a patch it will always be a patch and it will be slightly different in colour anyway

You can get a slurry that adds colour back to the tarmac but you would have to do the whole drive or it would leave a patch
