Can I use 100 mm Rockwool Slab & 15mm Plasterboard as underlay for Laminate floor?
Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.58 PM
Dear Sir, I have a first floor flat in a purpose build house. I am planning to change all carpets to laminate floor. To avoid complains from downstair flat that my handyman suggested using 100 mm Rockwool Sound Insulation Slab & 15mm SoundBloc Plasterboard as underlay for new laminate floor. These will come to 130mm with laminate boards. Is this firm enough for laminate floor? Is the SoundBloc plasterboard strong enough as an underlay? Many thanks for your kindly commons. Kind regards, David

Hi,
100mm rockwool insulation can definitely be laid between existing joists. But you cannot have soundbloc plaster as underlay. On top of existing joists will be standard 22mm Tounge and groove boards or 18mm plywood. On top of that structural floor, it is better if Regupol mat (or similar) is used as underlay before laying the floor finish. Thicker the mat, the better for acoustic. Hope this helps. Regards.

Hi Rockwool insulation should go between existing joist not on top
And plasterboard as underlay it’s a no no
U can fit the soundblock plasterboards between joists it’s an accustic system, designed clips fit to joists then u run metal angle along and then soundblock plasterboard between joists the
8-10 mm acustic ruber self adhesive on one side fix it along joists then 18mm ply on top, that’s your acoustic flooring sorted,it’s well worth it.this can be done only if you refurbishing complete house as all flooring boards and ceiling needs to come out
Thank you
