Hi William, Make sure you get a quote / invoice from the tradesman with their details attached and they have insurance and are a legit company registered then I would say you'll be in safe hands. I would use a credit card as this will help protect you from fraud and you will be able to claim your money back (if things go south) from your bank.

All materials should be delivered to address of job . That way what you’ve paid for is at your home so there is no problem

With materials get them sent to the property its needed at to confirm what your paying for. Or have it soured by the trader and make payments by reciept of trans actions.
