builder failed to come to work and no reply to telephone after taking money for materials
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.04 PM
I hired Mgb builder( Matthew Buttler) with £3250. He asked money for material and workers that I have paid £2200 so far. He came only one half day (about 3 hours) and now disappeared. He did not reply my text and not answer my call. I would like to get back my money and change the builder to complete my bath room as soon as possible. What should I do?

If you have a paper trail of messages/agreement, you can chase the tradesman via the small claims court financially. You can also log a complaint with trading standards. Don’t let it go unpunished as the tradesman will be potentially quoting against honest reliable company’s.
Best wishes

Hi sorry your having problems.
Hopefully you have an address for this person or can find one.
The first thing would be to send a recorded delivery letter giving them 30 day to resolve or inform them you will be going to the Small claims court

Never do not give money in advance !!! Only if is having an office and you know where to find them.
And try to be patient, maybe he is having a bad day...or more....
If a trademan does not have money he is not a tradesman!
We make 400£ - 700£ per day so it does not have logic.

When it comes to how to pay, a builder or other tradesperson might ask you to pay a deposit upfront. This is fairly common, but don't ever pay the whole bill at the outset. Less reliable tradespeople are known to ask for upfront cash payments, so be careful.

You should never pay for a job in front no matter the amount unless you have a signed contract with the payment terms outlined. This gives you and the trades man security for payment and works to be completed.
