trust is a 2 way thing how can he trust you to pay him, once he has put material on site you might decide to cancel for what ever reason leaving him out of pocket, on any job i do if it is over £3000 i get 30% up front before i start, i have never had a problem with this, it is as far as i am concerned just good business.

The building trade is the only job were people expect there tradesmen to go out and pay for all the customers materials complete the job and hope that they then get paid, regardless of if the tradesman has a trade account or not this is not normal, if you order something from any high street shop they generally want you to pay in full beforehand , according to the government web site 90% of self employed tradesmen lose money through rogue customers but that does not make good TV.a deposit is a normal request and as long as it's made clear at the outset a deposit will be required when booking there is nothing wrong with this. The world is full of self employed workers working for nothing. Personally there is no one on here has the right to try and tell someone else how to run there business & if any customer of mine doesn't want to stick to my terms of business I will not do there job & they can get someone else. You have two choices. In reality deposits should be mandatory & all quotes should be charged for as well this would stop a lot of time waster Except your chosen tradesman term of employment or Get a different tradesman one who will accept your terms. Good luck Alex

Don't pay money upfront.. You can oblige to help with the cost of materials if you can.. Advice to you is to go with the builder to retrieve the materials or know what they cost prior to trusting the builder and this way you will know exactly what you are paying for etc... A good builder wants to help you and achieve good feedback from his help to you and therefore gain further trust and great feedback from you and further his progress of keeping their customer service intact,.. Kind regards SJ property maintenance

It doesn't seem normal for a company to ask for money in advance But there are still cases where some companies ask for an advance just to be sure that they take the job but in no case 30% 10% is more than enough for materials

The 30% may be to cover materials, if you have any doubts you should definitely have a chat with your plasterer in order to clear up any confusion

It's not unusual to ask for a deposit on big jobs I'll only ask to cover materials myself personally It's all about trust If you trust his reputation and him/her on a personal level then you should have no hesitation
