Uneven newly laid patio and loose tiles?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.47 PM

Edit: the first lay of some tiles before the builder went on holiday were rocking. Left to set for 5 days and they had movement. He did everything you're supposed to according to the husband but they still moved. Possible issue with preparing the raised bed? Also the tiles are 20mm Global Stone Grande 1200 x 600. Newer ones called grande metallica. Rectified. Thank you for the comments so far. We've had a new patio area with 1200x600 porcelain tiles put into the garden. Could anyone advise as to how even the tiles should be? They don't all appear exactly one level? How realistic is this? Should we expect them to be generally one level with a few exceptions? Also should they all be bang in line or would you expect a few to be ever so slightly out of line in places? We've gone for them all being in line rather than a brickwork pattern and they just seem a touch off in places. Perhaps the grout will help it all to look a touch better? Just feeling a bit deflated to spend so much money and expect perfection but not get it. However if this is unreasonable I'd rather know so I can adjust expectations accordingly. Not sure if several other teething problems have just given a bad impression or if we've chosen poorly. Thank you in advance.

Much depends on the quality of the materials and then the landscaper. Some porcelain is bowed and on the pack states it must be laid at 1\3 bond, some isnt rectified (meaning all exactly the same size). However your landscaper should have assessed the tiled before laying and advised if they were poor standard. If they are good quality tiles (I don't mean you think they are I mean they are flat and true, and calibrated sizes then I'm affraid your landscaper is poor. But even the best landscaper can't make poor tiles look perfect (so establish that before you dismiss your installer). Your title also mentions loose tiles, but can't see anything about that in the details, however they shouldn't be loose they should have a slurry primer applied to each tile before installing which make them pretty much impossible to life without smashing the tiles. If they aren't using slurry primer, and in my opinion levelling spacers etc then I'd be halting works and getting in an expert to assess.

There will be variations in the thickness and width of each tile. They should be sorted through to ensure the same width before laying to ensure good alignment. Any that are not the correct size should be swapped by the supplier.
