Why's this new plaster bulging out- should i skim over it again?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.47 PM

So I had a chimney breast removed and plastered, but it seems to be bulging out. The guys who took out the chimney breast removed up to the wall. It's out by about 5mm... did the guys put in too much plaster? Thinking about skimming over the whole wall to make it abit straighter, but the plasterer tells me that the chimney wall was sticking out, so ended up showing in the plaster. Should he have plastered the whole wall instead of just the chimney area?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes my professional opinion would have been to plaster the whole wall. To cover any discrepancies in wall. You will find this very common in older properties. Hope this helps Mike @Prestige C&D ltd

There could be a multitude of reasons, without looking at it there can be no definitive reason given, however if the wall is not straight then the wall should have been made true by either roughing it up, carlite or board pending on what the make up of the wall is. This is the foundation to level out a wonkey wall priot to plaster.

Prep work is the key to Plastering on old walls. Bulging is usually cause by plaster being to thick in the area that’s bulging. If the wall was made straight with bond coat before hand then this shouldn’t happen. They way forward is to sand bulge area down and use a straight edge to check the wall. pva with watered down pva twice and re skim the hole wall.other than that knock of and start from scratch with the bonding coat then pva then re skim

Without seeing the original substrate it is hard to know, too many variable factors. It sounds to me they have done a basic level patch job to a poor standard.

If the plaster is falling off. I would recommend replastering. Basically taking it from 0. And with proper preparation you should not get any trouble.
