Bathroom extention on top of first floor kitchen

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.42 PM

I live in a semi detatched with a ground floor kitchen and bathroom extension. I would like to build on top the this existing extension so the bathroom can be moved up to the first floor. After reading some posts I know i have to get the foundations checked but is there a law about blocking the neighbours view/line of sight from her window. There is no extension next door but they do have the first floor extension.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

best thing is to take a couple of pictures and do a rough sketch of what you propose, then take it to your local planning office. they will advise you on how they stand on the extension the window also depends on are you buiding up to the boundary.

When it comes to building an extension on top of an existing ground floor extension, there are several factors to consider, including structural stability, building regulations, and planning permission. As for the question of blocking your neighbor's view, there may be legal considerations that come into play, depending on the specific circumstances. First, it's important to note that every local council has its own set of regulations when it comes to planning permission, and it's worth checking with your local authority to see what their specific requirements are. Generally, if you're building an extension that's within certain size limits and meets other criteria, you may not need planning permission, but this can vary depending on where you live. In terms of blocking your neighbor's view, there may be a legal principle called the "right to light" that comes into play. The right to light is a legal concept that gives property owners the right to receive a certain amount of natural light in their homes. If your extension blocks your neighbor's view and significantly reduces the amount of natural light that they receive, they may be able to make a claim against you. However, the right to light is a complex legal issue and the specific rules and regulations vary depending on where you live. In some cases, it may be possible to negotiate with your neighbor or make changes to the design of your extension to minimize any impact on their view and natural light. In any case, it's important to work with a professional architect or builder who can help you navigate the legal and regulatory issues involved in building an extension. They can also help you design an extension that meets your needs while minimizing any negative impact on your neighbors.
