Remove plasterboard at bottom of chimney breast to make hole

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.47 PM

Hi, We've m1oved into a 1930s house where the previous owner plasterboarded over the fireplace hole to install a mounted gas fire. We've had this removed and can feel that the bottom of the chimney breast is hollow. We want to knock this through to make the hole a feature. Can we do this ourselves and then get a plasterer to plaster over the brick etc and neaten up the area? Thanks!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would advise getting a fireplace expert to check that surrounding brickwork is well supported and that gas pipes are capped by corgi registered tradesmen before undertaking any work hope this is useful to you sec plasterers

Yes. At least inspect the opening. If you feel your not up to making good Once open. It be a lot cheap for the trades person to be able to price an opening. Maybe get a sweep in as soon as possible to clear and bird nest etc. mark innes. Innes construction

If there is a gap or builders opening there already then it would suggest that the fireplace is supported. If you are thinking of changing the size of the opening out or up then you must make sure the opening is supported with a lintel. This is usually a concrete or metal strip that runs across the top of the fireplace opening, this must project at least 6 inches either side.
