Sub base for raised sleepers seating area

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.29 PM

I have created a raised seating area in the corner of my garden using sleepers as the border/structure of the raised feature. The space is approx 3 meters x 2.4 meters. Previously the area used to be an over grown flower bed. I have placed the sleepers in position (two sleepers high, sleepers are 8" x 4", so the 2 sleepers on top of each other being 16" high in total). I have filled the cavity with soil/earth/stone from another part of the garden I have dug out. I am now in a position where the sleepers cavity is almost full and I need to decide what sub base to use before compacting. I have read that MOT 1 seems to be best as it compacts best, however it isn't good with draining? I then read crushed granite dust is best however doesn't create a sturdy sub base like MOT 1? (Annoyingly the bags only come in jumbo bulk bags which seems to be way too much for my small area). Can you please advise what sub base will be best for the size of the area? It will be used to have a table and chairs on. Thanks!

Type one stone is best for any job like the one you are doing . If you are putting flags on top for your seating area then put a slight cast on them so water runs off surface and that will take away your worries about drainage through the type one

Mot 1 is the correct material to use you dont have to get it in a 1ton bulk bag you can go a pick up 25kg bags from a merchants like jewsons etc you get get ir more or less refined i.e more crushed and dusty or just different size crushed stone so its more self binding and will drain however just raise you sleeping 20mm on one side and lay some slabs with the slight fall to run water, that or run all 4 corners of the are to the middle with a little sump hole of p gravel to drain water.

Type 1 would be an ideal sub-base for this, being a mixture of dust to large items of stone this allows it to compact down really well and allows water to drain through easily.
