How easy would it be to turf my own garden?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.42 PM

Hi there, I've had some quotes in to turf my garden and they are more than I can afford, so I am now considering doing it myself. Would someone with no experience be able to do the job or would i be out of my depth? It seems as though most of the job is manual labour, which I am happy to do, but i dont want to lay the turf and then find that it dies after a few months. I would need to first remove the current grass and weeds. Would you recommend weed/grass killer before removing the grass and weeds or is this unecessary? Many thanks.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Easy way to complete the task at hand would be to hire a turf stripper. Complete remove the top layer of turf all over. Get some free top soil and lay your new turf. Hope that helps👍

Some weed killers can reside in the soil for a period of time and thus may affect your new turf. You’d have to use a grass turf cutter to remove the old grass (this will also remove a large number of weeds from the seed bed). From there it’s a matter of laying the new turf. As someone who’s not done it before, I’d recommend you strip the turf and then buy the new so you can lay it straight down. If it takes you longer than expected to strip the current turf, your new lot may suffer in the current heat.

Hello, In my opinion, depending on how dense thickness of the grass and weeds are, I would weed kill the area and then either use a rotavator or till it, level off cultivated soil then apply turf, lay turf by alternating the strips Harry | TotalWorks
