Rafter feet on outside wall, how to prevent moisture
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.42 PM
Hello and thanks in advance for your help. I have changed a conservatory to a standard extension, but the foundations were not good enough to do double skin wall all the way up, so we did block outside and a timber partition type wall on the inside. The rafters are resting on the outside blocks and we've been asked how we'll be protecting the rafter feet from moister, what are the options?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

There are few options from what I can gather and if what I'm visualising is right. One is you can paint/stain the feet which will stop any moisture getting into them. The other is to attach a facia and soffit around the feet. I hope this helpful and I've visualised the problem properly

You have 2 option
1) fitting a facia and soffit will automatically protect truss feet
2) if they need to be exposed a good quality primer under coat and gloss finish will give adequate protection and generally keeping them protected in years to come
Hope this helps

If the rafter feet are too remain exposed then you have a couple of options.one would be to prime undercoat and gloss. The other is to get a good wood preserver and sealer.
If it's being covered with fascia & soffit this will protect against moisture just be sure to add a vented soffit to have good airflow.

All depends on what finish your looking for fascia and soffits are the modern look but if u have a old barn listed building or going for the old look the a good Ronseal or exterior paint always works as long as it’s maintained frequently
