New Gas Connection... How do you take gas line from the ground floor to the 3rd floor.

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.42 PM

Many thanks to the gas engineer(s) that answers my questions. I am getting a new gas connection. The gas connection company told me that they will only connect me from the main pipe and the the the gas meter will be on the ground floor. My question is how do I take the gas line / pipe from the ground floor to the 3rd floor? Does the pipe needs to be boxed or be exposed ? Could I have the gas meter on the 3rd floor instead of the ground floor? can the gas pipe run externally ? or does the pipe have to come internally causing damage to the communal areas? Many thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes you can run the pipework externally. It’s also likely the most direct route so the best option as less restriction on pipework and fittings etc

All multi dwelling buildings have external Gas Pipework these days with gas meters being on the ground. depending on what your feeding, you could go with 28mm all the way to 3rd floor then 22mm. some have plastic sleeving externally to protect the gas pipe, also because of the distance an ECV(shut off valve) would be fitted immediately on the interior. as for a gas meter on the inside, generally no , only these days gas meters have to be external, best is call up your gas utilities and they will tell you. regulation dictates choice for good safety reasons.

The best route for the new gas pipe is externally then into the property. You can have a gas meter in the property as well as the one the gas supplier fit on the ground floor. You should contact your local gas safe engineer to carry out the work for you. Hope this helps.
