Best insulation option for suspended wooden floor

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.58 PM

Hi, We live in a semi detached bungalow built in the 1970s which has suspended floor. Currently, the property has bare floorboards. They get really cold in the winter. We had a look at the void under the bungalow. It's the normal size and there is some rubble which makes using a robot not a great option. We are looking at the most cost effective option to improve the insultation. The options we can see: - a good "Underlay" like a thermofoil then installing engineer wood and/or carpet. Benefits: easy and cheaper. - Insulating the raft under the floor boards. (It seems the most sensible option but it feels expensive and destructive). The installing engineer wood and/or carpet - Install an underfloor heating system (and benefit from the insulation as a result). Then (you guessed it) install engineer wood and/or carpet - Is there any other options I haven't covered? The full size of the bungalow is just under 60m2. We live in Oxfordshire. Where can I get the information to compare the U or R value of all options? I did try to post a job but no one responded.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello. I suggest to use Celotex PIR for your suspended floor, min 70mm thick placed between the joists. Min. U value for suspended floors is: 0.25 W/m2K Regards, Tafix ltd.

The cheapest option is underlay and carpet. To take the floor up insulate and replace is expensive. You could lay super foil 19+ Over the joists. To be fair insulated underlay in the past has worked and failed
