Removing internal glass porch door

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.58 PM

Hi, I was hoping someone would be able to help. We are in the process of buying a new property, the house currently has a porch which consists of a UPV front door and large window which follow through to an internal glass door. Our survey has come back saying that an allowance should be made to rectify the internal door as the glass does not have a safety rating/label attached. Would it be possible to just remove this door and door frame? Thanks, Hannah

Yes you can or change over the glass or just remove the door! As doors have to have safety glass, whether it's laminate or toughened and there should be a stamp in one of the corners. If the door has a sidelight that too has to be safety glass, hope that helps you

NO you can't just remove the internal door! In doing so your porch no longer becomes an add on to the front of the property and becomes part of the property. Which means it needs the necessary floor, wall and roof insulation to meet building regulations which will also need to be applied for. If the internal door is old it may have been fitted before safety regulations were needed. If the glass is less than 6 inch wide it might be 6mm glass which doesn't need to be safety glass. And possibly if the glass is clear it could be laminated which meets regs but doesn't have kite mark. Cheapest option is to replace glass for about £100 from decent glazier. 1hour job tops. Hope this helps. 👍
