Builder Worked One Day Out of Whole Month

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.04 PM

Hi, I'm looking for some advice. I have sourced a builder through MyBuilder for my friend, who is having a single storey extension built. They both met up and discussed the job which the builder seemed happy to do at the time and provided a full quote for and my friend paid about 30% of the job upfront. There are a few materials outside his house (not £4k worth), but other than that there is barely anything to show for his investment and trust in this builder. The builder was supposed to start over a month ago, but he has worked one day since then and has dug the foundations in the wrong place. He tried to change the whole extension that was agreed to try and fit in with the (part) foundation that was dug in the wrong place. Every time either of us ask when he will be restarting, he keeps saying things like "I'll start on Monday as I'm busy with another job" or "the week's nearly over now, I'll start Tuesday". Of course, that day comes, and he does not show up. This has been going on for over a month now. He finally agreed to do what was asked initially at the agreed price, but he's now become very complacent in responding to texts (said he'd be there yesterday and still no word from him). We've both given him space but that doesn't seem to work either. Some of his tools are at my friend's house, so I'm unsure if he has any intention of coming back or not. If he is having personal issues, he should just be honest and it would be understood. I feel guilty as I'm the one that sourced him based on his 100% positive feedback. How long would you leave it and what would you do next? I appreciate any help. Thank you! Edit: Thank you all for your help!

I feel that you have accommodated him too much in the past and he is just playing on the fact that you don’t mind. Set up a meeting, to talk about why he is being this way, (I suspect that he is not bothered either way) you as customers need to know where you stand. If you don’t get a reasonable response, then get rid.

Hi, sound like you are having a hard time at the minute and your communication have broken down , I think your best thing would be to text and ask for a meting to be set up face to face and explain you problems and concerns and say this is your last chance to him to explain his problems, say you need a date that you are starting and he needs to be on site most days to get the work done. Please be in mind there are material shortages and long delays at the mint witch could have coursed problems on your project and other customers he is trying to get completed, please bear this in mind.

I believe part of the answer is right but he’s probably used some of the deposite to start other jobs and now has no money to come back to finish the said work . Problem is I’ve personally heard lots of this and he should just contact the client and be completely honest and try and come to an amicable decision.
