Plastering & Rendering

Removed cupboard now can see 4 inch wide brick from floor to ceiling.

Hi, I have just bought a house that had a cupboard in a bedroom which was home to the header tank and cylinder. This has been removed and I have pulled the cupboard out. However!, now there is no plaster underneath where the frame was and I can see brick in the same shape and length of the 4x2 it was made out of. Clearly the scratch coat and skim coat were put on after the frame when in. Could I just mix up some plaster (skim) and lay it on thick filling the void? The then feather in to the rest? If that makes sense.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes... You first need to clean both the edges from top to bottom creating flat level surfaces, also the void itself of dust lose material etc. Then paint on a good coating of pva. Next it's best to use an undercoat plaster first (bonding etc) leaving the finished 3/4 millimetres short of finished level. Let this dry then paint again with pva, now you can fill with plaster...level off completely with a hard trowel making sure all is smooth with no uneven patches... Wait until almost completely dry and feather in with a moist sponge.

If it's an outside wall I would recommend rendering exposed brickwork and plaster.

Hi There from my Experience as a Plasterer it would be better to Render sand/cement over any brick work. Firstly coat the brick work in PVA let the PVA be applied not to watery let it set. Then apply the Render Scratch coat then PVA over the Scratch coat then let that set then apply Hardwall Then Finally PVA over the Hardwall Then let that set Then apply the Multi-Finish plaster believe me not only is it a solid and Firm base but you will never have a problem like that again!

If the wall is back to the brick work you have 2 options, either to dot and dab a plaster board , or to hard wall thistle the brick to create a bond coat that won't suck the plaster in , either option you choose , you will then need to apply a 2 coat system of multi finish.
