Can I tile on chipboard after putting ditramat on the chipboard?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.04 PM
I have built a new suspended subfloor with new joists, celotex insulation with 20 mm chipboard as the subfloor. I have different opinions from different tilers, some say I need additional hardie backer 6 mm or 12 mm. However this means it will cost me more money. And some say I can just use ditramat and then tile upon it. Has anyone tiled on ditramat and chipboard and if you did, were there any issues? Is this commonly done nowadays? Thank you.

Plywood and chipboard: These materials are particularly prone to deformation under the influence of moisture. DITRA Matting neutralises the stress occurring in the tile covering and prevents the penetration of moisture.

You will need hardie backer or cement boards. Ditramat is for concrete as an example not wood. If you don't use hardie or cement boards the floor WILL fail. The extra cost of this is unavoidable if you want it completed correctly.

Hi. You must have under this chipboard a very strong basement and after you may put tiles on ditramat. Your flooring don't need to be flexible at wall. You must now about it.

a cement tile board - 6mm ( hardbacker for example ) should be glued and screwed ( size 4 x 20mm screws )at 200 mm centres( positions are also on hardibacker) then prime boards , tape the joints and use a flexible adhesive and grout . if in doubt see hardibacker website

Hi, as long the chipboard is well braced, well primed then ditra matting, then a good grade of flexible adhesive, then you will have no issue whatsoever, also if you go for 6mm wediboards, again no problem, hope this helps.
