Leaking pipe in upstairs bedroom
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.04 PM
My son was doing some DIY work yesterday and accidentally hit a pipe upstairs. It was leaking and so far his put duck tape over the hole. We were not able to turn off the water supply as we don’t know where it’s allocated inside or outside the property. I have turned of the boiler since yesterday as I was unsure if it would be safe to use. Problem is we have no hot water. Is it safe for the boiler to be turned back on?

It depends what pipe you have hit, hot/cold or central heating, if the pressure on your boiler has dropped it will be a central heating pipe, a speed fit straight coupler would be the quickest and easiest fix, you will also need a pipe slice, if it’s central heating pipe you will need to drain the system first unless you think your quick enough to cut and connect as there shouldn’t be much pressure if any left, if it’s a main hot or cold you will need to find your stop tap and then carry out the repair, the boiler is perfectly safe to still use as long as your 100% positive it’s a water pipe.

I would definitely prioritise finding the tap to the water supply before commencing any work. If you have the previous owners/landlords contact details ask them. If not ask your neighbours who have the same house layout as you.
