Full rewire stages has left me confused

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.47 PM

I'm having a full rewire as I renovate my house. The electrician has said for me to fit the kitchen cupboards before he even does the first fix of the electrics in the kitchen. This makes no sense to me as currently there are no electrics (in the correct places) in this room as it was previously a lounge. I have given him a layout of the kitchen and also measured and drawn on the wall where the sockets should be. He has chased a line from one end to the other but no cable is there yet. I don't want to have to plaster after the kitchen goes in and I don't really want to have to move the kitchen in and out because the wires haven't been placed first. Is this normal practice? I can't see why fitting all the electrics can't be done first but I'm just a layman so I'm asking you guys. **Thanks very much for your answers. Really appreciate it. Very helpful. I've spoken to my electrician and he's coming to do the first fix before the kitchen arrives. Thank you! **

Suspect he is going to throw cables around under the units. Bad practice and lazy

Normally everything would get done on 1st fix, then plaster, fit cupboards etc.

Hi, no it is not normal practice to wire afterwards. It could be that he is inexperienced with kitchen electrics. As the customer, you should be more assertive and insist all wiring is carried out before any of the kitchen is installed. Measuring up for sockets may not be the best solution if you are unfamiliar with rules about distances from hob and sink. Also socket heights are important. Leave that to him and decide how many sockets you want and where generally you want them but the actual position should be set-out by him. Similarly, appliances need careful positioning of sockets below the worktop. Integrated appliances can't have sockets behind them, for example. There is quite a lot of experience needed to get this right. Ask him how many kitchens he has wired.

First fix should indeed be done before the kitchen units are fitted.

Change sparky It is painful to plaster after the cupboard have been put on. The chasing also has to be deep enough to cover the wires with the conduit and ideally you'll need 20mm depth for the plaster to go on (bond and skim) to avoid any potential cracks. Get the first fix done with isolated wiring and back boxes on, then plaster and paint, then fix the cabinets and appliances followed by the second fix and test. Good luck
