Tiling

Tiling over peeling paint

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.47 PM

I want to install new bathroom tiles above a bath. I've replaced the blown plaster but the section above it is the original wall which has paint still on it which is quite old and flaky in places. I've scraped off the flaky bits, but do i ideally need to remove all the old paint before tiling? Or can i use some sort of primer to bond the old paint better, and just tile over that? I'll be tanking the wall anyway.

Hi there, You need good mechanical and chemical bond for your tile adhesive. To achieve mechanical bond, score the wall really well with a Stanley knife in a criss cross pattern. For chemical bond, the best product I personally use, go for blue grit by febund. Good luck 👍 James

If your tanking the walls out I would still advise to spray the wall wet an scrape the paint as best as before priming it

That is a good answer provided the plaster is really strong. But if it is latt and plaster i would always recomend removing all the plaster and reboarding with new plaster board. If the room is large enough you could board over the old plaster. Provided you screw it to the wall.
