Central Heating

Boiler and tank programmer

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.47 PM

I have a system boiler and a joule hot water tank but no means of controlling either. I'm currently switching the boiler on and off at the plug switch as and when I need hot water. Please can you advise what programmer I need in order to be able to control my hot water supply and central heating radiators, with the option of adding in my underfloor heating system once that's been installed in next few weeks? Thank you

As previous post but leave decisions of underfloor heating as this should be fitted by installer But if you are asking this question have you the knowledge to fit?

You need a 2 channel programmer, along with 2 x zone valves wired in to the programmer. One for heating & one for hot water. Regarding your underfloor heating, I would connect a wireless, programmable thermostat to each underfloor zone. Hope this helps.

I’m assuming that by hot water tank you mean unvented hot water cylinder. If so you should have a cylinder stat fitted to the cylinder, zone valves for the heating and hot water and a 2 channel programmer and a room stat. Underfloor heating should have a stat for each zone so you and turn rooms on and off independently. I recommend you use a well experienced engineer that is unvented certified, gas safe and has experience with underfloor heating.

Type in S plan Programmer into google. You will get loads of results come up. My personal fav is the Honeywell Home ST9400C which will control heating and hot water. You can also get it as a pack if you need zone valves and cylinder stats etc. The underfloor heating comes with its own thermostat/programmer. it’s set up to be automatic so it comes on and off by itself and is controlled independently from the heating/hot water of the boiler (additional zone valve)

There is a very good solution this days to fit a mart thermostat like ,,NEST” or similar so you can control 3 different zones like hot water tank, radiators and underfloor heating. One more thing which make the life easier is that you can download the app and control the system from a distance.
