You're paying for the skills not the hours, as You're getting a tradesman not a labour/grafter. Regardless of how quickly job is completed, that day the prospect of going to another job diminishes.
It's like expecting office workers to get paid for 22 days a month since the other 8 days are the weekends and they don't work in the office!

Hmm, I think you are getting dayrate and a bulk quote for a job mixed up. What did you expect him to do on day 2 , sit in his van outside just to make the hours up?

This depends what was agreed before the job was started. Did the trades person quote you a fixed fee of £360 to do the job, or did they say that this is the day rate and calculated on an hourly basis?

It could also be the case that the rest (some) of the time they maybe be collecting materials or dealing with suppliers etc. Sometimes just because a trade isn’t inside your house for 8 hours a day doesn’t mean their focus is not 100% on the job at hand. I’ll generally let the customer know if I need to go and resupply and give them a time frame but I know trades that’ll just get up and leave then come back.

Yes thats correct. Its his right to charge you because he stiil has to claim his days pay for working on ur property yeah only 4 hours but still gave you the day to finish the job

Some traders will charge for a full day if they think it will take them 2 days to complete the job and have not booked in another job. Personally I only charge for the time I’ve worked because I always have something else to go to.

We would only charge for the hours worked, but would normally quote for doing a job as above was you given a total price for doing the work stated if so he could has asked for £180 on both days to cover the overall cost .
