Carpenter not honouring a quote/wanting to charge a lot more
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.46 PM
A carpenter is trying to get about 50% more to carry on with the job that his accepted quote as he says he has made a mistake in pricing materials and claims he will be lucky to break even. Material have been delivered and paid for but don't seem to cost as much as he claims. Can a professional trademan help on this?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Really the only person that can help you with this is your chosen tradesman.
He looked at the job then quoted according, whilst material prices are all over the place at the moment they are a bit more stable than last year.
Realistically a quote is a quote. Unless other wise stated.
Good luck alex

If there is no extra work to be added to the original quote unfortunately for him he has to honour the quote. I've made similar mistakes when quoting on the past and have always payed for them out of my own pocket as it was my fault.

A price is a price, its unfortunate that they've made a mistake but they should stick to the price that's been agreed.

Quote is a quote, as long as the job hadn’t changed. I’ve lost money before and it’s something you just have to accept sometimes. Easy way to clear it up would be ask to see the materials receipts. I never make money on materials, some trades do. My advice would be to keep talking to him. If you’re happy with his work so far, maybe a compromise is a good idea.

Its important to do a thorough survey of the project before quoting for the work, and then providing the scope of work has not deviated from the original spec, the Contractor should honour his quotation. It would of course do him no harm to discuss his mistake to the client in the hope that maybe they could come to an agreement, however the client would be under no obligation to pay anymore than originally agreed.

Unless stated in his quote that if material prices rise before bought, the price will have to be adjusted I’d say he’s got to take it on the chin as a loss. If it’s no extra work you’re wanting done then it’s just unlucky. We’ve all done it. I know I have and had to take the hit.

Unfortunately in todays economic climate all materials are increasing in price fortnightly, where I'm based no timber merchant will honour a quote that's older than 2 weeks old !
After saying that your carpenter should have explained this issue when pricing your job and really if he hasn't should honour the quote as he has already started the work

However unfortunate it is for the tradesman, it's his own fault. A quote is a quote and any mistake leaves yourself as a tradesman liable. Cheers

If he give you that quote then he should stand on the quote he produced, some times unexpected occurrences happen but there only small things, 50% is way too far
