System Boiler: Ideal Vogue 18kW vs Baxi 24kW

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.46 PM

The current boiler is 16years old (make: Potterton 24kW) and looking into replacing. It is a system boiler: water tank + 11 radiators + 3 bedrooms + 1 shower + 1 bath (town house terrace) Current boiler is Potterton 24kW -and have had 3 x quotes stating following: - Ideal Logic 10yrs warranty - Ideal Vogue 18kW 12yrs warranty - Baxi 24kW 10yrs warranty Why would one say 18kW is more than enough for that property and other say its better 24kW as it will not use more due gas its being efficient. They offering HIVE aa smart thermo. So, I am confused to what to do? Is 18kW really not ideal? Also, the Baxi guy said, that Baxi is best and compared it being like RollsRoys engine, everything out of copper and not cheap quality. Baxi vs Ideal ? Is it just preference or more to it? By the way, boiler works and I just thought its too old and not efficient anymore. Also not sure how I would measure if its efficient or not? UPDATE I am just confused why one would say 18kW is undersized and one says 18kW is oversized! How do you measure that? 3 bedroom 1 kitchen 1 living room 1 ensuite 1 bathroom 1 small wc 1 x tiny radiator in small WC 1 x tiny radiator in entrance hall 1 x thin radiator in Kitchen 1 x (biggest) large radiator in living room 1 x mid range radiator in upper floor coridoore 1 x small radiator in small bedroom 1 x radiator in doublebed room 1 x small radiator in bathroom 2 x radiators in attick masta bedroom 1 x radiator in ensuite shower ———— 11 radiators in total 🤦🏻‍♂️ Also the Cylinder water tank takes 170 litter of water I think. How much kW does it need to be fed ? How do I calculate 11 radiators + water tank to say “minimum kW required”? If 18kW is enough, why was. 24kW fitted in? :/ Aarrrghhh is just so painful. Ideal 12yrs warranty vs baxi 10yrs. Which one has more benefits? Further more, is it not counter productive having 2 x radiators in master bedroom? Would that not one overule the other? Whats best approach on this? Switch one off maybe? Likewise, kitchen and livingroom is open plan almost! I cut the wall in half and now 2 radiators in a surface of round 15sqm.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

An 18kW boiler for a 3 bed property seems oversized. An 18kW boiler can supply heat to around 12 radiators comfortably. I much prefer Baxi over Ideal, due to their stainless steel heat exchangers and brass components. Edit: get your engineer to carry out a whole house method heat loss, as they should be doing when installing a boiler. It’s a way of calculating how much heat your whole property needs, rather than calculating it room by room. It’s the minimum required

Get heat loss calculations from the people who quote, Neither Baxi or Ideal are quality boilers in my humble opinion. But if you go for a Vaillant or vies man you will have to pay more.
