Is this movement normal after removal of a load bearing wall?
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.28 PM
Hi everyone and thanks in advance for any advice! So as part of a kitchen project I recently had a load bearing wall removed that separated the kitchen and dining room. There were some cracks to plaster work on both the first and second floors of the house directly above where the wall was removed, but the company we used said that some movement was normal and that there was nothing to worry about. However, I’ve now noticed that our bedroom door frame is crooked, with the left top corner a good cm or two lower than the right top corner. This is evident visually without a spirit level. The door also no longer closes. Is this something to be concerned about? Is this level of damage to other floors of the property an unavoidable consequence of structural work, or is it more likely that the builders did a poor job of supporting when they took the wall out? Edit - RSJs have been put in place where the wall was removed, and supports used when the wall was being taken out. Edit - structural engineer was brought in before the job was carried out and everything OK’d before works began.
