Partially drain central heating system with radiators closed. drain valve leak.

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.42 PM

I had my pressure system central heating powerflushed and refilled with inhibitor last week. I have since developed a leak in a drain valve on the system. Guessing the drain valve washer has deteriorated and needs replaced. I spoke to the plumber that completed the powerflush and he has stated that i could close both valves on all the rads, open the motorised valves and just drain whats in the pipes so i don't have to refill with inhibitor. My question is, when i drain the system as mentioned above when i go to refill the system should i refill it with the radiators valves still closed, then open the radiators valves and bleed the radiators? Or drain, replace the drain valve, open the radiator valves and then refill the system and bleed the radiators? Just concerned about airlocking. Thanks

Hi Almil In answer to your question, you can do it either way. Personally if you are aiming to keep as much inhibitor in your system as possible I would pressurize the system first to check that the new drain off body is not leaking before opening any radiators. Once the system is pressurized and you are happy that the drain off is fine, I would go around and open all the radiators starting on lower floors then bleed them all giving any air that may be trapped time to rise up to the top of the radiator. Once you have done this make sure the system pressure is correct, turn on the heating and hot water and allow it to run for 10-15 mins and then go around and double check all radiators are getting hot and also bleed again to make sure all air is out. I hope this advice has helped you out and you can get your problem sorted Steve
