Paid for materials but job never started
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.42 PM
Hi I paid a builder for materials for a stud wall, to make a small staircase and to hire a skip as he requested beforehand. Only he never turned up to do the job. How do I get my money back if he is not answering any of my calls or text?. Im not sure what to do? Any advice please.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Michelle,
It seems the only thing you can do regarding this matter is report them to Trading Standards. We're sorry to hear that this has happened to you.

Hi I'm really sorry to hear that you have experienced unprofessionalism from this company.I would suggest giving the skip company a call and explaining the situation and see if they will refund you the money paid for the empty skip.Also now you have paid for the materials and being you still want the work carried out maybe get in touch with your local council and see if they can recommend a local company to provide you with a professional tradesmen to do this for you . I hope my advise helps all the best cudmore carpentry & construction

Hi Michelle, I'm very sorry to hear this has happened to you. I agree with Vista Build they should first be reported to Trading Standards. It can be difficult to get your money back in this situation especially if you paid with cash. But two options are;
1. Threatening with legal action via small claims court to get him to respond, hopefully this will be enough to get, at the very least, some money back.
2. If you still have no response, pay a reputable Carpenter, Builder or Contractor to complete the works then Invoice your previous builder for the materials & skip hire, If he doesn't pay the invoice do a money claim online, If he doesn't defend it he may get a CCJ. If he doesn't settle the CCJ the court may enforce the order with bailiffs. Unfortunately many have gone down this route and didn't get a penny back but at least the builder will have a CCJ which hopefully gives them some problems as a form of deserved punishment.
Hope some of this advice helps, and sorry to hear this has happened, very frustrating to read this as it is the acts of a small minority throwing a bad light over all the honest, reliable hardworking tradesmen.
All the best.

Firstly, you should never pay up front for anything, i NEVER charge until job is done. However, from experience a friend of mine had, you can contact Police and they should pursue the individual, he has taken money from you illegally, and as he will not answer you, it may be possible to have a warrant issued for his arrest.
Taking money with no intention to do the work is a fraudulent act, dont be scared of the issue, pursue it via your local police station, at worst they will steer you in a different direction to get your money back and the individual who fleeced you will be on file.
