Plastering & Rendering
Wrong sand used in final coat render.
Anonymous user 3 March 2024 - 3.42 PM
Hello I am after some advice. So I have a slight issue. I am currently fixing up my court yard which is a small area. I had it rendered today, but my plasterer has accidentally used the wrong sand. He has used my building sand I had put to one said instead of rendering sand that was also In the garden. I have no idea how it happened as they were both in labelled bags! Is this going to cause me hassle in the long term with cracking etc? It’s quite a small ish wall, but it’s already got hairline cracks in it as it’s drying. Any advice?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
Building Sand isn't ideal, it isn't properly washed to remove the salts. Plastering sand is.
If it hadnt already cracked I would have said to maybe see how it was but if cracks are appearing I would advise to remove and refit.
Your plasterer shouldn't have a problem doing this as it's his error.
Good luck with it.
If Cracks are appearing they are only going to get worse, take it off and re- do it, I would be getting same person back to rectify it.

Sounds like possibly the wrong preparation.
The area should be dampened down and a good scratch coat of render applied the day before or or even longer.
This gives a more uniform surface to apply the top coat to and even suction the type of sand shouldn’t make any difference it will just be a slightly finer finish
